CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

The news about her birth mother left Ela confused. She’d been sure that she was destined to join the convent, and now she was no longer comfortable with her decision. But she knew that she had to find work and help her mother support them. If she chose, she could have gotten a job at a factory. But factory work could be dangerous and Helen discouraged it.

“Why don’t you take some classes in typing and shorthand. I have been supporting us thus far, we will survive while you go to school. Then once you’re finished you can find secretarial work,” Helen said.

Ela agreed, but although she never told Helen, thoughts of Zofia Weiss weighed heavily on her heart. She loved Helen and no one could ever take Helen’s place as her mother. But Ela wished she could talk to Zofia. There were so many things she would have loved to ask, so many things left unanswered. And what about Donald Taylor, the mysterious American who had planted his seed and then conveniently left Poland before the Nazis came in? Who was he? So many questions rolled around in Ela’s mind. Sometimes she wondered if there was some way to find people who had been in the Warsaw ghetto. But she had promised her mother that she would not mention anything to anyone about Zofia or her Jewish roots. And so, Ela kept all of her secrets buried in her heart with a hundred thousand questions and no answers.
